Kirkcaldy
has a long and illustrious history dating as far back as 596
AD, however it is probably our contribution to the UK and
world economics that Kirkcaldy is most famous for.
Our
most famous forefather is none other than Adam Smith, author
of "The Wealth Of Nations," the pioneering book
on free trade and market forces, which has shaped the social
values and economic beliefs of the western world. Indeed Adam
Smith is probably more famous in America where his book has
been instrumental in creating their country's value system.
More
can be found on Adam Smith by visiting the Adam Smith Institute
website at http://www.adamsmith.org/.
Kirkcaldy
is also famous the world over for its linoleum works and it
was home to the first floorcloth manufacturer in the country,
founded by Michael Nairn in 1847.
By
1874 there were 5 other linoleum works in Kirkcaldy and much
of the town's civic buildings were donated by the trusts of
these companies including, the Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy High
School and the Museum and Library
Nairns
continues today in it success around the world with its modern
product offerings of Marmoleum and Cushionflor.
